Russia is counting on restoring the situation in Burkina Faso to normal

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its hope that the situation in Burkina Faso would return to normal after the military coup and the arrest of the country's democratically elected President Roc Marc Christian Kabore by a military group.

The Russia Today website quoted the ministry as saying in a statement today that it "closely follows developments in the situation and is counting on its return to normal as soon as possible, expressing its concern about the grave deterioration of the internal political situation in Burkina Faso."

The ministry added that according to the information it received, President Kabore was detained in the territory of a military garrison in the capital and Ouagadougou, calling on Russian citizens to temporarily refrain from non-essential travel to Burkina Faso.

In the same context, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the military coup in Burkina Faso, calling on the putschists to lay down their arms and ensure the physical safety of President Kabore.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations condemned the "epidemic of coups" that the world is currently witnessing, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and to choose dialogue as a way to resolve the crisis in Burkina Faso.

For its part, the Economic Community of West African States "ECOWAS" expressed its concern over the developments in Burkina Faso linked to the attempted military coup and condemned this "dangerous behaviour", saying that it "will not tolerate it."

In a statement, the organization called on the military to return to the barracks, preserve the republican system, and prefer dialogue with the authorities to solve problems, and held them responsible for the physical safety of President Kabore.

A commander in the Burkina Faso army announced earlier today the dismissal of President Kabore, the suspension of the constitution, the dismissal of the government, the dissolution of Parliament and the closure of the borders, while the fate of Kabore is still unclear.
