Saône-et-Loire: the presence of a wolf confirmed, a dozen sheep killed

The wolf is back in Saône-et-Loire.

A breeder based in the village of Oudry found that 11 of his 12 ewes had been attacked, France 3 Bourgogne Franche-Comté reported on Sunday.

One of them would have died on the spot, the ten others, injured, had to be euthanized by a veterinarian.

This same farmer had already suffered the loss of 14 ewes last December, also attacked by a wolf on another of his plots, indicates the site of the local chain.

The recent attack was indeed perpetrated by a wolf, indicates the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB).

The breeder is now taking steps to get reimbursed.

In the meantime, he placed surveillance cameras in the meadow where the attack took place.

"We have a prefect and an administration who do everything to support breeders, but we realize that wolves and breeding are incompatible," said Bertrand Lacour, president of the Saône-et-Loire chamber of agriculture with the local media. .

In 2020, nearly 3,730 wolf attacks were recorded in France and caused the death of 12,000 animals, mainly sheep.

A total of 624 adult wolves are currently present in the territory, an increase of 7% in the population in one year, according to data from the OFB.
