The capacities of the burial chambers in the urn steles in the new part of the Walpertskirchen cemetery are gradually coming to an end.

Therefore, the stele system is now to be expanded step by step.

Walpertskirchen

– In the municipal council meeting on Thursday evening, the council set the course for this. The municipal council unanimously voted to commission the earthworks and foundation work for the maximum overall expansion, so that further steles can be gradually erected on this basis over time. The paving work is also to be carried out now, with the possibility of subsequently erecting the steles without any problems. If all this is done now, it would be "easier to work in the future," explained Mayor Franz Hörmann (CSU). A total of eight additional steles could be erected on each side. Three to four additional steles will be placed in the near future.

With its unanimous decision, the municipal council followed the landscape architecture office Bauer, which was commissioned with the planning.

Since the capacities of the burial chambers in the urn steles are gradually coming to an end, the municipal council tackled the issue of expansion.

The earthwork and soil work, laying the foundations, planting and paving are expected to cost around 40,000 euros, Hörmann informed the municipal council.

The investment is to be included in the 2022 budget.

The committee also wants to think about an additional type of grave for the urn area.

We would like to develop ideas for this.

SPD councilor and gardener Beate Aust offered to present various design options to the council with illustrative material.

The urn steles are in the new part in a natural environment in front of the Hammerbach and flank the sacred work of art by the Walpertskirchen sculptor and culture prize winner Erich Heuschneider, who died in 2020.

The sculpture, which weighs around 360 kilos, was erected eleven years ago and is made of rusting steel, "which stands as a symbol of the transience of all life," as Heuschneider explained at the time.

A striking gold-plated cross made of stainless steel forms the end at the top as a symbol of salvation.

And the vertically rising form elements are bent outwards at the upper end and can be interpreted as a symbol for the resurrection.

In the immediate vicinity, many other works of art by Heuschneider are presented on the cemetery grounds as a sculpture path.
