It's a horror scenario: an 80-year-old passed out while driving on the freeway.

His wife reacted with presence of mind - and was able to prevent worse.

Nothing worked on the A95 between Wolfratshausen and Seeshaupt on Monday.

The freeway was closed around 10:45 a.m.

The reason was a medical emergency.

The police and paramedics were able to avert the worst.

An 80-year-old from the Munich district was traveling with his wife on the A95 in the direction of Garmisch when he "suddenly and unexpectedly fainted due to health problems," according to the police.

His wife immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation.

She grabbed the steering wheel and steered the car onto the hard shoulder of the freeway.

She brought the Volkswagen to a standstill there and thus prevented a potentially serious accident.

Other motorists noticed the emergency and came to the rescue.

"Together with another road user, the wife immediately initiated resuscitation measures," writes the police in their press report.

After a short time, a team from the Bavarian Red Cross arrived, and a rescue helicopter was also deployed.

He had to land on the roadway in order to be able to intervene.

The Autobahn was therefore completely blocked in the direction of Garmisch.

"The patient was taken to the Murnau accident clinic by rescue helicopter," said the police.

The operation was completed after about half an hour, and the motorway was reopened to traffic.

An emergency doctor with a BRK team, a rescue helicopter, the Münsing volunteer fire brigade and three police patrol crews were on site at the scene.
