AI: Facebook is building one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world for its metaverse

2022-01-25T10:10:46.309Z

The “AI Research SuperCluster” will be completed this summer and will be able to manage more than 1000 billion parameters and data sets of one exabyte, “the equivalent of 36,000 years of high definition video”.

It will be the fastest supercomputer in the world, assures Meta (the former name of the Facebook group).

Since 2020, the giant has been working on this supercomputer project which will allow it to carry out its research in artificial intelligence and will be used in particular to progress towards the metaverse.

The AI RSC (AI Research SuperCluster) will enable Meta to use data from its various platforms, foremost among which is its Facebook social network, to train artificial intelligence engines in the field of language or image processing. .

"

While our previous artificial intelligence research infrastructure only used open access data and other publicly available datasets (...), RSC will allow the use of real-world examples,

" explains the group.

36,000 years of high definition video

Artificial intelligence engines are trained by ingesting huge amounts of data, for example text for language processing models, or video images for machine vision models.

The RSC will eventually be able to train artificial intelligence engines taking into account more than a trillion parameters, in data sets reaching 1 exabyte.

An exabyte represents a quantity of 10 to the power of 18. To help represent such a quantity, Meta gives the equivalence of “

36,000 years of high definition video

”.

Thanks to this supercomputer, Meta can hope to build systems offering "

real-time translation for many people speaking different languages, allowing them to work together simultaneously (...) or to play together an augmented reality game

" , explains the American group.

He will also help him develop new augmented reality tools.

Necessary technologies for its metaverse project, this new digital world “

where applications and products using artificial intelligence will play an important role

” added the group.

According to Meta engineers, the power of the RSC places it today at the level of the American Perlmutter, the 5th supercomputer in the world in terms of computing power, according to the TOP500 list which is a reference in the matter.

According to them, it will become, with the planned improvements, the “fastest artificial intelligence supercomputer in

the world

”.

Once we complete Phase 2 of the RSC build, we believe it will be the fastest AI supercomputer in the world, with performance of nearly 5 exaflops of mixed-precision computing.

Until 2022, we will strive to increase the number of GPUs from 6,080 to 16,000, which will increase the AI learning performance by more than 2.5 times

”.
