The Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, based in Manhattan, confirmed on Tuesday the conviction for drug trafficking against the Mexican capo Joaquín
El Chapo
Guzmán.
The court rejected the arguments that Guzmán's lawyers raised to request the annulment of the trial against him, among them, the alleged misconduct of the jury and the deplorable conditions he lived in jail.
"I am sure that Mr. Guzmán will seek review by the Supreme Court," the defendant's lawyer, Marc Fernich, told Reuters in an email.
Guzmán was convicted in February 2019 of trafficking billions of dollars in drugs and conspiring to assassinate enemies, stemming from his role as leader of the Mexican Sinaloa cartel.
He has been serving a life sentence at Colorado's Supermax, the most secure federal prison, and has also been ordered to forfeit $12.7 billion.
