Your own candidate for the presidency?

Hubert Aiwanger had big plans.

But his idea shattered - in his own parliamentary group.

Munich – It was an attempt at political ignition: With his own candidate for the office of Federal President, Free Voter boss Hubert Aiwanger wanted to pick up votes from the Union in the Federal Assembly.

However, he was turned down by his party friends in Bavaria.

Aiwanger fine-tuned the Federal President's plan - and encountered resistance in his own parliamentary group

Aiwanger's plan: Member of the state parliament Eva Gottstein (72) should run as Federal President.

With her, the federal leadership of the Free Voters and the state parliamentary groups from Rhineland-Palatinate and Brandenburg, this was pre-explored.

When Aiwanger wanted to please the members of the state parliament in Munich in a video conference on Tuesday (January 18), the mood changed according to information from our newspaper.

There were sharp objections - strategically and because Bayern felt ignored.

Aiwanger's idea of putting up a candidate against incumbent Frank-Walter Steinmeier only just got through.

In addition, MP Tobias Gotthardt (44) submitted his own candidacy – and won against Gottstein.

Federal presidential election: "Unnecessary bickering" among the free voters - the result is open

After two non-public parliamentary group meetings, Tuesday and Thursday, the situation is thus confused - Aiwanger's proposal was lost, but the Gotthardt candidacy was not enthusiastically welcomed either.

According to MPs, there was a needless bickering.

Whether Gotthardt still wants to now is an open question anyway.

A FW candidate wouldn't have a chance with 18 out of 1472 votes anyway;

the majority of SPD, Greens, FDP and - sometimes grudgingly - the Union for Steinmeier on February 13th.

Own candidates can also be expected from the right and left edges.

The left has already officially nominated the social medicine specialist Gerhard Trabert.

Ironically, the AfD could send the leader of the Union of Values, Max Otte, into the race.
