Bad news for mediator Baerbock: According to Melnyk, German Vice Admiral Schönbach had "sent the Ukraine into a deep shock".

Munich – A curious appearance cost the German Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach his job. Against the background of the Ukraine conflict, he had defended Russia's President Vladimir Putin, thereby undermining the position of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), who was trying to mediate. Andrij Melnyk, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, finds Schönbach's resignation insufficient and speaks of a "shambles".

During a visit to India last Friday, Schönbach said, among other things, that the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine feared by western states was “nonsense”.

What Putin really wants is "respect at eye level" and: "It's easy to give him the respect he wants - and that he probably deserves." This emerges from a video of the performance published on the Internet.

Melnyk told the

world

that "his country welcomes the fact that Mr. Schönbach has offered his resignation".

However, the scandal left "a shambles" and "massively questioned" Germany's international credibility and reliability.

Schönbach's statements had "put the entire Ukrainian public in deep shock".

Ukrainian ambassador: "German arrogance and megalomania"

Melnyk drew a comparison to the time of National Socialism: "With this condescending attitude, the Ukrainians unconsciously felt reminded of the horrors of the Nazi occupation, when the Ukrainians were treated as subhuman," he said.

Melnyk also spoke of a "cynical trivialization of the illegal occupation of Crimea" and a haughty questioning of Ukraine's sovereignty.

The statements made by the Navy chief, who has since resigned, speak of "German arrogance and megalomania, with which one of the highest-ranking heads of the Bundeswehr dreams of a holy alliance with the war criminal Putin and a German-Russian modern crusade against China".

Melnyk was referring to another statement by Schönbach, who had said: "We need Russia against China."

Schönbach about Baerbock: "Young and inexperienced"

As

taz

and

Business Insider

unanimously report, Schönberg also said about Baerbock when he appeared: "Our new Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, yes, she is young, she is 40 years old, she is inexperienced."

On Saturday, Schönbach initially said on Twitter that his statements had been "imprudent".

"There is nothing to interpret, that was a clear mistake."
