Ukraine's leaders today (Tuesday) tried to reassure the nation by declaring that Russia's invasion was not immediate, although they acknowledged that the threat posed by it was real and at the same time received another shipment of American military equipment. US President Joe Biden has warned tonight that such an invasion would have "huge repercussions" on the world, and even threatened personal sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow denies it plans to attack Ukraine, which was formerly part of the Soviet Union, but has deployed about 100,000 troops across Ukraine in recent weeks and is conducting military exercises across Russia and Belarus. The United States and its European allies in NATO have responded by preparing for a war that could break out at any moment, and they are threatening to exact a heavy price from Moscow if it chooses a military option.

Several rounds of diplomacy between the parties failed to yield breakthroughs, and tensions escalated further this week.

NATO has announced that it is strengthening its deterrence capabilities in the Baltic Sea region, and the United States has put some 8,500 troops on high alert for a potential deployment in Eastern Europe as part of the Alliance's "response force" if necessary. "We are looking forward

to sending troops to defend the kingdom's allies in Europe.

At a European unity demonstration in Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Schultz and French President Emmanuel Macron called for steps to be taken to lower the flames." We expect clear Russian steps to de-escalate the situation, "Schultz said. Macron

,

who said he would talk to President Vladimir Putin on the phone on Friday, added: "If there is aggression, there will be a reaction and the price will be very heavy."
