Bottlenecks in Aßling and Grafing at the northern approach to the Brenner - Railway: Enough space for new tracks

The railway gives a time horizon for the announcement of the new track route by the district of Ebersberg.

According to the group, supposed bottlenecks can be solved.

District

– In the first half of 2022, the railway wants to present its “selection route” for the northern access to the Brenner, two new tracks through the southern district of Ebersberg.

This is what overall project manager Christian Trader said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The selection is to be made from four main routes presented in December.

Dieter Müller, who is responsible for the Ostermünchen–Grafing station section at Deutsche Bahn, once again rejected an expansion of the existing line, with the well-known reference to gradients and curve radii.

In addition, a new building there collides with a good dozen residential properties near Schammach and Oberelkofen (both in the town of Grafing) and the strictly protected Attelleite.

"That's a fallacy," said Müller in response to the argument that the loads would be lower if the existing line was expanded.

Due to additional escape routes, this would require more than a doubling of the route width.

Cost-benefit calculation: rejection of the tunnel solution

The planners commissioned are currently in the process of considering the altitudes, the infrastructure cut through and the tunnel lengths of the four selected routes.

"It's progressing well," said Project Manager Tradler about the in-depth planning.

In the end, the route with the best cost-benefit factor is selected based on a previously defined catalog of criteria.

The planners also insist that the highest possible proportion of tunnels is difficult to reconcile with the economics of the planning, since the costs per tunnel kilometer are many times that of an above-ground route.

When asked, the railway planners did not want to commit themselves to a favorite route.

The selection also includes looking at the winning route from the perspective of various interest groups, such as farmers, nature conservationists or mayors.

They had weighted the criteria within the framework of the dialogue forum.

On request, the railways commented on some bottlenecks that caused question marks.

Osterseeon: Routes merge with existing structures

The planners explain that a lot of flat, open space is needed to merge the new route with the four tracks in the direction of Munich.

At Osterseeon, an 8.5-metre-high "flyover structure" with two ramps and a total length of around two kilometers is to be built.

Grafing train station: New tracks between the train station and the car park

North of Schammach in the direction of Kirchseeon, all four main lines run along the existing line.

That means: The two new tracks cross the regional train station Grafing-Bahnhof.

"There's room for that," promises section chief planner Müller - between siding track 6 and the commuter car park on the west side of the station.

The railway does not thwart the plans for the construction of a vocational school there either.

Aßling: suggested route leads through the village

The rough route "Orange" includes the proposal to drive through Aßling above ground and parallel to the existing route - a nightmare not only for Mayor Hans Fent.

There is a possible corridor for two new tracks on the slope in the direction of Hochreith, without demanding any sacrifices in residential development, the consideration has shown.

By the way: In extreme cases, the Ostermünchen junction could be relocated a maximum of one kilometer to the north, in the direction of Aßling, if a tunnel under the Inn that is currently being examined makes this necessary because of the incline.

However, project manager Trader calls this project “very expensive”, which is considered to be quite unlikely.

The decision will be made in August at the latest.

Niclasreuth: Route proposal hard on the outskirts

The yellow route "Limone" would pass the Aßlinger district of Niclasreuth by a hair's breadth and separate a local business, the "Ziach-Kaiser", from the rest of the town.

"You might not be able to see the route from the village," suspects railway planner Dieter Müller: Because of the slope to the south and the maximum gradients to be observed, it is plausible that the new route would cross under the village street and the outskirts in a trough.

The catalog of criteria for determining the route can be accessed at brennernordzulauf.eu.
