The reality of irrigation water storage after heavy rains has witnessed a remarkable improvement within most of the 14 dam lakes in Lattakia, in addition to the Al-Sun irrigation project, which was positively reflected on the total dam stores.

The director of water resources in Lattakia, Firas Haider, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the 10 distributed climatic monitoring stations belonging to the directorate recorded the highest cumulative rainfall over the lakes of the Salah al-Din and Hamra dams, at a rate of 686 mm, while the lowest was 506 mm over the Al-Huwaiz Dam lake.

Haidar explained that the improvement in rainfall rates this rainy season led to a noticeable improvement in the irrigation water storage rates within the dams’ lakes, in addition to the filling of the lakes of some other dams, which are the dams of Al-Haffah, Beit Al-Qusayr, Karsana, Al-Jawziyah, Khirbet Al-Jawziyah and Hamra, and the abundance of the spring of Al-Sunnah improved from 5 cubic meters per second. To become 14.5 cubic meters per second as of today.

Haidar added that the dams of October 16, Al-Thawra and Ballran are the main dams in Lattakia Governorate, as the total percentage of irrigation water storage within its lakes constitutes 88 percent of the total storage volume when all the dam lakes are filled.

As for the overall storage rate of the dams, Haidar said: “The storage rate within the Tishreen 16 Dam lake, which is considered the most important dam in the governorate, amounted to 67.8 percent of the total storage of the dam, and in Al-Thawra Dam it amounted to 45 percent, while it reached 88.17 percent in the Baluran Dam. As for the total storage volume within In all of our dam lakes in Lattakia Governorate, the percentage of storage reached 60.15 percent.

He added that the mentioned percentages can be increased, and they are promising for the full filling of all dam lakes, given that we are still at the beginning of the rainy season for this year, which heralds a good agricultural season for the current and next year and a general improvement in groundwater resources.
