Jan Hatzius: “The pandemic will have a lower impact on the growth of the world economy this year”

INTERVIEW – Despite the Omicron wave, the chief economist of the bank Goldman Sachs says he is “reasonably optimistic” for 2022.

- As Omicron continues to spread across the world, what will be the impact on the growth of the global economy this year?

Jan Hatzius.

-

I am reasonably optimistic.

The impact of the pandemic will be lower this year than last year.

The services sector still remains depressed, while spending on goods, especially in the United States, is still very high.

This is a key factor that fuels inflation.

All of this will take time to sort out.

But the imbalances will diminish over time.

2022 will be another year of strong growth, certainly not as much as 2021, but, with around 4.3% growth in global GDP, most countries will remain above their normal trends, with the notable exception of China .
