The UGC recently released data on students from eight aided universities in the 2020/21 academic year. The number of dropouts in this academic year was 2,643, an increase of more than 20% compared to the 2019 academic year when the amendments were reversed, and a record high in ten years.

Among them, PolyU has the largest number of dropouts, with 518 students, followed by the University of Hong Kong and CUHK, with 476 and 403 dropouts respectively.


In the 2020 academic year of CUHK, 403 students terminated their studies, most of them were undergraduate students.

According to the latest figures released by the UGC, about 87,000 people were enrolled in undergraduate programmes in the eight aided universities in the 2020/21 academic year, a decrease of 427 compared with the 2019/20 academic year.

In the 2020/21 academic year, 2,643 students from the Eighth University dropped out to study government-funded sub-degree, bachelor's and postgraduate courses, an increase of about 22% compared to 2,161 in the previous academic year.

Looking through the data, the dropout rate of college students in the 2020 academic year has reached a new high in ten years. The number of dropouts in 2012 was 1,718.

Among the eight universities, PolyU has the largest number of dropouts, reaching 518; secondly, Hong Kong University and CUHK have 476 and 403 dropouts respectively, all of which are mostly bachelor students.

Comparing the increase in the number of dropouts, HKBU was the highest, with 225 dropouts in the 2020 academic year, an increase of about 37% year-on-year; followed by the University of Hong Kong, with an increase of about 33%.

The number of dropouts of PolyU students was the highest among the eight universities, with a year-on-year increase of 37%.

"Hong Kong 01" inquired about the dropout situation in the 2020 academic year with the Eighth University. HKBU said that every year it receives a small number of students who apply for withdrawal due to different personal reasons, and the number of dropouts each year will vary according to the actual situation.

HKBU has noticed an increase in the number of students dropping out of universities in Hong Kong as a whole, and will assess the impact of relevant trends, understand the reasons for students dropping out, and implement appropriate policy responses.



The University of Hong Kong pointed out that the number of students who discontinued their studies may rise or fall every year; last year, the percentage of students who dropped out of the University of Hong Kong in the total number of undergraduates was similar to that of other universities.

The University of Hong Kong said that every year, a small number of local and non-local students in each university are suspended from their studies for various reasons, including those with unsatisfactory academic performance, and the school will continue to provide assistance to students with learning difficulties.



HKUST replied that it receives applications for withdrawal from students every year due to various factors including academics, work or family.

Lingnan University pointed out that students who dropped out were mainly due to personal reasons such as family and health.
