The 39 horticultural associations in the district have more than 7,500 members.

No wonder there are so many good ideas lying dormant.

Two projects want to compete at state level.

District

– It's an unwritten law: Homegrown fruit and vegetables simply taste best. And a flower in the garden is even more beautiful than in a vase. No wonder that many people enjoy digging, planting, caring for and harvesting. There are 39 clubs in the district where gardeners can exchange ideas and tackle things together. They are organized in the District Association for Horticulture and Land Conservation. He recently invited to the annual meeting - 40 interested people clicked into the online event. And this not only provided information (see box), but also awards.

Because four participants from the district have applied in the state-wide competition "diversity championship".

The Bavarian State Association for Horticulture and Land Conservation called for this.

A total of 113 clubs from all over Bavaria are taking part.

In order to reach the finals, participants must first win at the county and district level.

The district association decides which projects are included in the diversity championship

The Weilheim-Schongau district association had to decide which two projects would go ahead - and on top of that they each received 500 euros in prize money.

The five-member jury selected the children's group "Gartenbande" from the Rottenbuch fruit and horticultural association and the Wielenbach village beautification and horticultural association for adults.

Both convinced with creative ideas.

Last year, the two leaders of the “Gartenbande”, Barbara Landerer and Elfriede Iglhaut, were faced with the question of what they could develop with the children throughout the year in a Corona-compliant manner. They wanted a project that can continue even if personal meetings are not possible - so a common vegetable patch was canceled for the Corona period. And so they got old wheelbarrows, made holes in them and had the 14 children plant perennials, vegetables and herbs. "Insect friendly," says Landerer. The creative planters were parked in the children's gardens. "They took care of the wheelbarrows." Tips were given personally or via WhatsApp throughout the year. During the summer holidays, the group then went on a bike tour through Rottenbuch together and examined the 13 wheelbarrows in total.

Something created for the future

The project was not finished after the harvest.

Together, the "garden gang" made scarecrows that will "guard" the wheelbarrows that are to be planted this year and possibly also be equipped with plants.

"The whole thing should accompany us for a while," says Landerer, who won with her group at district level in the category "Youth-Reich.Nature - we create the future".

The project of the adult winners is also not a one-off thing, but creates something for the future.

The horticultural association Wielenbach and its youth group "Die Gartenspezis" expanded the meadow orchard on a municipal property as part of "Edible wild fruits and wild berries in nature and garden".

The club members are also planning to build a bee barn.

"The whole thing is close to nature and has a long-term perspective," says Chairwoman Angelika Balser.

Wild trees and old varieties were planted.

The people of Wielenbach should be able to harvest fruit themselves in the future.

The club also wants to show what “great things” you can do with it.

The youth group led by Monika Schwarz put together a booklet with 20 recipes, including: plum barbecue sauce, false olives (cornelian cherries) and blackberry ketchup.

The ideas of the two associations are now being evaluated by a jury at district level.

The winners will be announced there by May.

July 1st is the hot phase.

Then the Bavarian Diversity Champion will be chosen via online voting.

The groups of children, in turn, are evaluated by a specialist jury.

So it could be exciting for the district participants.

And even if it doesn't work out with another award: They've always done something for nature and the future.
