The police began clearing a piece of forest occupied by activists in Wuppertal on Tuesday morning.
The forest should be cleared, which the owner, a local company, had been confirmed by court order, the police said.
To do this, all persons who were staying there without authorization would have to be persuaded to leave the premises.
Wuppertal - "We want to proceed in a de-escalating manner and first get in touch with the people," said a police spokesman.
One counts on an operation lasting beyond the day.
The spokesman was initially unable to say how many activists were on site.
According to a spokesman for Fridays For Future Wuppertal, there were about 20 activists in the forest.

Fridays for Future Wuppertal announced that in the Osterholz in the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel district, 1,500 trees should give way to a spoil heap for sand, clay and soil from limestone extraction.
This is "a scandal in terms of environmental and climate protection".
There have been protests against the planned clearing for more than two years.
It should not be that in the middle of the climate crisis, individual economic interests are put ahead of climate protection.
