Open windows certainly don't help to save energy, says Joachim Fischer, head of the Oberlandrealschule in Holzkirchen.

Electricity, gas, heating oil – energy prices have risen.

This is not only felt by private households: district treasurer Gerhard de Biasio also expects a plus for district buildings.

District – Schools are particularly expensive when it comes to energy.

But: It is precisely there that the subject of energy is dealt with in a particularly thoughtful manner, as two headmasters explain.

Last year, the district paid 553,715 euros to the electricity provider for all properties.

This year, the district treasurer expects 674,700 euros, an increase of almost 22 percent.

The eleven secondary schools run by the district have the highest proportion of electricity consumption.

While electricity consumption there last year cost 450,427 euros, this year 551,600 euros are planned.

The costs would increase by 22.5 percent.

Heating costs are getting more expensive

When it comes to heating, things don't look rosier for the district treasury either.

All in all, this had recently cost 770,208 euros for all properties;

this year it should be 892,700 euros: almost 16 percent more.

The schools make up the lion's share here, too.

Starting from 657,592 euros, their heaters would be 15.3 percent more expensive.

Warm classrooms are expected to cost 758,500 euros this year.

With the increase, however, one must take into account that 2020 homeschooling has reduced costs, explains de Biasio.

Presence is expected this year.

Also included in the price are additional costs due to the full occupancy of the Anton-Weilmaier school in Hausham after its general renovation and the new extensions to the Gmund secondary school and the Holzkirchen grammar school.

Of course it will still be more expensive.

And: It doesn't stay really warm in schools for long at the moment.

Joachim Fischer, head of the Oberland Realschule in Holzkirchen, confirms: "The frequently open windows definitely don't help to save energy."

Realschule Holzkirchen refers to energy prices

He himself takes the ventilation with humor: "Sometimes you wonder which student is behind the hat, the anorak, the scarf and the mask," admits the headmaster with a wink.

In fact, the students would no longer take off their winter clothes at all, because otherwise they would get too cold when airing them.

Even if Fischer does not have exact figures for the school's energy requirements, he emphasizes that energy is definitely an issue at school.

"The term runs as a common thread through physics lessons."

In the eighth grade, the children are introduced to the topic and in the tenth grade there is a "final chapter on energy supply".

The advantages and disadvantages of regenerative and non-regenerative sources and their extraction are also taught.

While the school still has to be heated - costs aside - the students there learn everyday skills and life economy.

These overarching educational goals can be found, for example, in the subjects German, religion, geography and ethics, in project presentations or in the environmental working group.

While the latter is not offered during the pandemic, a sense of responsibility for nature and the environment is being created elsewhere.

Gymnasium Tegernsee: Principal is happy about environmental awareness

Werner Oberholzner, Head of the Tegernsee Gymnasium, adds for his school: "The teachers deal with the topic of energy consumption together with the students."

And: "The recent history was about river straightening in the 19th century," says the headmaster.

The first comment from a student: "Isn't that bad for the environment?" This thinking can also be transferred to other areas and impressed him.

Oberholzner emphasizes that the students' environmental awareness is very high - even if heating the thick walls is not cheap.
