District – The Rotwand wildlife sanctuary has been in the district of Miesbach since December 1st.

Now the signs have been stolen – with fatal consequences.

The signs didn't even last a month: two signs that point to the new wildlife sanctuary in the Croda Rossa area and were only put up on December 1st were damaged and stolen at the end of December.

Spokeswoman Vanessa Schallmoser from the district office in Miesbach provides information about this.

One sign was in the Sandbichler Alm area, the other in the Auerspitz summit area.

It was a triangular sign "Wildschutzgebiet" and an information board about the ban on entering.

One sign was found in a nearby pine field, the other remains missing.

The posts of the signs were connected to the concreted-in ground sockets with screws.

Appropriate tools had to be used to remove the panels.

Two years of intensive preparatory work

The horror was great, according to a statement from the district office: After two years of intensive coordination with farmers, Schliersee forestry operations, tourism professionals in the Tegernsee Schliersee alpine region and nature user representatives from the German Alpine Association, the authority only issued a protection area ordinance at the end of November.

This states that between December 1st and July 14th of each year, a 320-hectare non-contiguous area around Lempersberg, Benzingspitz, Wildes Fräulein/Jägerkamp and Marold Schneid may not be entered.

The area is in the municipalities of Fischbachau, Schliersee and Bayrischzell.

Protection of endangered animal species

The reason for the wildlife sanctuary is to protect animal species threatened with extinction: Instead of a possible 150, only 25 black grouse currently live in this last retreat in the Bavarian Alps.

For years, the chickens could not breed and raise their offspring undisturbed, and were constantly forced to flee by ski tourers and hikers.

The wildlife sanctuary is intended to help the population recover.

In order not to fundamentally exclude nature users and to promote understanding, some exceptions were allowed on popular hiking trails and even a new, alternative hiking trail was created.

Tourism in harmony with nature

The dismantling of the signs is a setback for all those who are committed to sustainable tourism in harmony with nature, it is said.

Rangers, area supervisors, representatives of the lower nature conservation authority and district administrator - they are all stunned by the brutality with which efforts to protect nature and species can be trampled underfoot.

"It's unbelievable in the truest sense of the word," reports nature conservation ranger Alexander Römer, who himself spent hours looking for the missing signs.

His colleague Andreas Koepferl - the two of them carried the signs up the mountain and concreted them in there - is just as shocked: "You just don't understand it.

You try to take everyone with you and explain why a wildlife sanctuary is needed here, and then something like that.”

They will not be discouraged by the incident: new signs are coming.

In addition, the presence in the area will be intensified, supported by part-time rangers from the Tegernsee Schliersee alpine region.

charge against person unknown

The Miesbach district office has also filed a complaint against unknown persons for theft or embezzlement and damage to property that is harmful to the public, says Vanessa Schallmoser.

The resulting property damage amounts to around 1,500 euros, for which the taxpayer now has to pay.

"However, the damage caused to the animals is much greater: without signs, most nature users do not even know that they are not allowed to cross the area," she explains.

"As a result, the 25 remaining black grouse are prevented from breeding again - with an uncertain outcome for the population." More information about the Croda Rossa wildlife sanctuary is available online at www.landkreis-miesbach.de.
