The US Pacific Fleet announced that its latest F-35C fighter jet has crashed while trying to land on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the South China Sea.
CNN quoted a statement from the US Pacific Fleet as saying that "the accident occurred while the fighter was landing on the deck of the aircraft carrier yesterday, as the pilot jumped safely and was rescued by a military helicopter," noting that the pilot is in stable condition, while seven sailors were injured in the accident, three of whom were transferred to a hospital. A hospital in the Philippines while other sailors on board were treated.
The fleet statement indicated that the accident occurred while the plane was performing a routine flight, while an investigation is underway into the accident, which is considered the first for a plane of this type.
