Gräfelfing - "Bahnhofstrasse is a little chaos": The Gräfelfingen municipal councils heard a lot of familiar things when Alisa Picha-Rank (Obermeyer office) and Tobias Kipp (Team Red) presented the first part of the integrated overall traffic concept for Gräfelfing - the inventory.

They listed well-known infrastructure deficiencies, habits and trends, albeit backed up with numbers.

The experts had been working on this 170-page inventory for almost two years - also made more difficult by Corona - which can also be found on the Internet on the community homepage (www.graefelfing.de).

They conducted traffic censuses, a citizen survey, interviews and, in the fall of 2021, several workshops with key societal groups on various topics.

The number one problem area is Bahnhofstrasse. With 920 cars per hour, it is fully utilized at peak times, the same applies to the parking situation at certain times of the day, even if there is no explicit parking shortage. The underground car park in the Bürgerhaus is usually only half full. Cars account for 75 percent of traffic, bicycles for 15 percent, and pedestrians for the rest. The sidewalks, on which the bicycle lane runs and the shops set up goods and advertising, are not sufficient, nor are the bicycle parking spaces. Not surprisingly, most of the accidents in Gräfelfing take place on Bahnhofstrasse. The only real accident black spots are the large intersection of Bahnhofstrasse/Pasingerstrasse/Würmtalstrasse, with five accidents involving personal injury in three years, and Bahnhofstrasse itself, where there was a fatal accident two years ago.

The experts also analyzed all types of transport with regard to connections: how quickly can you get where with what?

Conclusion: The public transport is in a remarkably good position in terms of offers and equipment (stops), the same applies to the sharing offers on site (instead of car, MVG bike, cargo bikes, Sixt-Share).

The charging station infrastructure has improved.

Of the 3,000 people who were written to, 900 took part in the citizen survey – an “outstanding” rate (Tobias Kipp).

The Bahnhofstraße was rated worse than the rest of the local area in terms of traffic.

Nevertheless, 48% want it to continue to be accessible by car in the future, 32% are in favor of a traffic-calmed zone, and 16% would like a pedestrian zone there.

Other points of criticism: the cycle paths, road safety and the traffic situation in Pasinger and Lochhamer Strasse.

Now comes the exciting part of the traffic concept: On February 9, the municipal council is to formulate guidelines for future traffic in a three-hour working session based on the inventory and will soon discuss and decide on them in the environmental committee and municipal council.

From this, the specialist planners develop a concept of measures over the summer, from which the municipal council can decide and implement concrete projects from the autumn.

At the latest, political differences are to be expected.
