The Greens at Tegernsee are fighting for a ban on fireworks.

An application has now been the subject of controversial discussion in the Gmund municipal council.

Gmund – New Year's Eve is over, but fireworks are a hot topic again.

At the latest when private individuals and restaurateurs enhance any type of event or celebration with flashes of light and firecrackers.

The Greens fight against it.

They have set themselves the goal of anchoring a ban on fireworks in the landscape protection area ordinance for Tegernsee and the surrounding area, which is to be revised.

The topic has been making the rounds in the city and municipal councils on Tegernsee since November last year, and after approval by Rottach-Egern, Kreuth, Bad Wiessee and Tegernsee, the Greens' application has now hit the Gmund municipal council.

Laura Wagner (Greens) presented the application online: With the basin of the Tegernsee valley, not only would detonation noise and flashes of light be reflected and transmitted over long distances.

"Animals are disturbed and get stressed," explained Wagner, who also listed air pollution from fine dust and the garbage left behind as arguments against fireworks.

According to Wagner, it is not about New Year's fireworks, but about fireworks from private individuals and restaurateurs, which are burned all year round and only require notification to the responsible trade inspectorate.

Mayor Alfons Besel (FWG) contributed that there is currently hardly any way to influence the district office is responsible.

It has also not yet been finally clarified legally in which area of application a fireworks ban should come into effect.

Fireworks ban on Tegernsee: Gmund should take on a pioneering role

The council members had different opinions. Barbara von Miller (SPD) thought the motion was a "good idea" because a bid would help change behavior. Gmund is already on the right track by having festivals without fireworks, such as the Festival of Lights. "So that doesn't hurt us," said von Miller and called for taking the "pioneering role". For cost reasons, Korbinian Kohler (CSU) didn't think much of her suggestion to try laser fireworks. He could not determine an increase in fireworks. Kohler found: “People should be bullied as little as possible. Any ban that doesn't exist is good.”

Georg Rabl (FWG) explained why he was against the application and the regulation on nature conservation law: "If this law does not prohibit people from running through the forests at night with bright lights on, then I see no need to support it." He saw the district office as having a duty to call for a restrictive practice and was against setting up a "bureaucratic monster".

Fireworks ban on Tegernsee: Greens want to set an example

Michael Huber (Greens) disagreed and defended his group's motion: It was not a "bureaucratic monster", but a minimal motion. "We should send a signal that we are not Munich's party mile," Huber demanded, and exclaimed: "Torch and headlamp hikes, trampled mountain trails, littered lake shores - everything else that comes with it makes it even worse," said Huber. "We can't go on like this." Group colleague Andrea Schack agreed and reminded them that the district, an eco-model region, is also committed to nature tourism.

The vote showed how controversial the topic is: With a majority of 13:8 votes, it was decided that the district office should approve the application for a ban on fireworks in the landscape protection areas of Tegernsee and the surrounding area as well as Egartenlandschaft around Miesbach (it includes the municipal areas of Dürnbach, Moosrain, Festenbach and Finsterwald) should check.
