US President Joe Biden will travel to New York on Thursday February 3 to discuss a subject on which he has not spoken much since the start of his mandate: crime and more particularly gun violence.

Alongside the city's new mayor, former police officer Eric Adams, the Democrat wants to lay out his strategy

"to combat gun violence

," according to a statement from the White House.

Joe Biden will tout

“historic funding for cities and states to deploy more police and invest in local prevention and response programs

,” the statement said.

The president, regularly attacked by the American right which accuses him of not being interested in crime, also promises “strengthened”

federal action

against

“illegal arms trafficking”

.

This beginning of the year was marked in New York by several episodes of gun violence.

A shooting in the Harlem neighborhood last weekend left two police officers dead.

A total of five police officers - including the two who intervened in Harlem - have been hit by gunfire in the megalopolis of nearly 9 million inhabitants since January 1.

In addition to attacks on police officers, the largest American city has been confronted with a series of violent acts which have created a great stir in recent days, for example the death of a 19-year-old Puerto Rican woman, shot dead by a robber on 14 January in a fast food restaurant where she worked.

Eric Adams, a right-wing Democrat and former police officer, wants to take stronger action against the proliferation of guns.

"Safety is my administration's highest priority and we welcome the opportunity to show President Biden how local and federal authorities can coordinate and support each other in this fight to keep New Yorkers safe."

, he commented in a press release on Wednesday.

Joe Biden, for his part, has issued a series of executive orders since his election to try to respond in particular to the illegal trafficking of firearms.

But the Democratic president has little room for maneuver, in particular for lack of a clear and clear majority in the Senate to pass major reforms on the subject.

According to a study published last June by the Pew Research Institute, 30% of Americans say they own a firearm.
