Indignant, motivated and full of humour: in the Marennes basin (Charente-Maritime) eco-citizens have recently been active in a war against waste.

Their name ?

Waste insurgents.

Their trademark?

Parodic and offbeat videos broadcast on social networks.

“Trashion” fashion show organized in a waste collection centre, nods to “Koh-Lanta”, briefing performed by Leonardo Di Caprio… the members of this young association are teeming with ideas for laughing around a most serious subject, pollution of natural areas.

In nine months, these volunteers collected nearly 22 tons of waste on the coast, in the surrounding marshes and forests. Their story began on March 1, 2021 with a banal walk in Saint-Just-Luzac, at the gates of Marennes. Delphine Basset discovers that day a ditch strewn with waste and launches, disappointed, a call for help on social networks. “Four days later, we were 13 strangers ready to pick them up. From this ditch, we finally took out 1.5 tonnes of waste,” says this mother and business manager.

The momentum born of this impromptu encounter has never wavered.

In July, these insurgents founded their association and have since multiplied local operations and interventions in schools and businesses.

“We organize one collection per month, or even two during high tides,” explains Delphine Basset, who has an average of forty participants.

"There is an addictive side to this waste hunt, but we must not be discouraged," says Raphaël Couillaud.

He joined the adventure after hearing about the first actions.

“I had already participated in pick-ups on the beaches.

It spoke to me, I'm from the area.

And I was seduced by their humorous tone”, explains this web developer who has since created the association's website.

Its members still hope to amplify their actions with the support of local communities and are already preparing their next operation scheduled for February 6 on a beach in Saint-Froult.

"We are also writing a parody of the series 'Alert to Malibu'", smiles Delphine Basset.
