Conservationists continue to fight to preserve the Eggarten settlement.

A new report identifies other bat species worthy of protection.

In order to prevent new construction, legal action is apparently not excluded.

Munich - The fight for the gem continues: residents and conservationists are arguing with the city about the Eggarten and want to prevent development.

ÖDP parliamentary group leader Tobias Ruff yesterday presented an ecological report that proves another three species of bats that are worthy of protection.

"Then there are now twelve species out of 27 that are known," says Ruff.

"A hotspot that you rarely find."

Eggarten Munich: 1800 apartments are to be built

As reported, the city in the north of Munich wants to build a new quarter with around 1800 apartments in the next few years.

But there are protests because conservationists see the Eggarten settlement as indispensable for the biotope network.

The area is a habitat for various animal species.

The city council decided in March that a development plan should be drawn up for the site.

However, the investor can demolish the buildings if they are not listed buildings.

The excavators are already rolling, CA Immo wants to demolish vacant and mostly dilapidated buildings in coordination with the authorities.

This is necessary because most of the houses are heavily loaded and in danger of collapsing.

Ruff and city council colleague Dirk Höpner (Munich List) assume that the demolition is inadmissible.

There is neither an FFH compatibility test nor a valid development plan.

And according to Ruff, the report underlines that the new building project urgently needs a species protection and FFH compatibility test.

For example, the question must be clarified as to whether the animals can be relocated.

"Further interventions must also be accompanied by these tests," says Ruff.

In addition, compensatory measures should be created in advance.

ÖDP and Munich List had already filed a criminal complaint against the demolition with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

Because especially in winter, the houses are essential for the bats, which are worthy of protection under European law.

"The demolition of the houses means death for the bats." The process is still ongoing.

Eggarten Munich: SPD and Greens want to stick to the new building plans

"One of the largest cooperative projects in Munich is being built on Eggarten," says SPD leader Christian Müller.

“Hardly affordable living space is guaranteed here.

That's why we think the development is absolutely right.” Green City Councilor Paul Bickelbacher said that of course they didn't want to violate nature conservation law.

“We have a very innovative concept here, and there is also a lot of greenery.

We need that just because of the fresh air.”

Meanwhile, Ruff can imagine filing a lawsuit against the city.

“The right to sue only exists once the building permit has been created.

And in order to be able to sue, you need facts.” These are now to be collected further, for example through additional reports in the spring, for example on endangered bird species.

"We're fighting for the last idyllic piece of Munich."
