The Murnau soldiers reach out many helping hands in the corona pandemic.

They help clinics and essential authorities find relief in the crisis.

The Bundeswehr provides service to others.

But this costs strength – and binds strength.

Murnau

- They come from the Werdenfelser barracks - but in the eyes of many they are sent from heaven: Soldiers from Information Technology Battalion 293 in Murnau are among the Bundeswehr units that were mobilized to fight the pandemic.

Up to 150 women and men in camouflage uniforms - 45 of them in reserve - can provide Corona administrative assistance and support overburdened clinics, health authorities and retirement homes across the region.

"Zen soldiers are deployed at the same time," says Lieutenant Colonel Marc Richter, commander of the IT battalion.

Murnau soldiers: diverse tasks in the accident clinic

They are currently doing contact tracing in the health authorities in Miesbach (7 soldiers) and Weilheim (currently 20, from Thursday 30), essentially they carried out entrance checks from December 10th until last week in the Weilheim hospital, this service ends today in a retirement home in Oberau.

Since December 10, there have also been a variety of tasks at the professional association accident clinic (BGU) Murnau.

Help allows accident clinic more time for patients

Help that arrives in two senses: "The support from the soldiers relieves our colleagues noticeably," says Sarah Heinze, Managing Director of the BGU.

Instead of being involved in additional pandemic-related organizational processes, "they can do their valuable work for our patients," emphasizes Heinze.

Without the support, their supply would have to be “further restricted”.

That is why the BGU is very happy that the deployment of the military was initially extended until February 22nd.

So far, 29 soldiers from the Murnau IT battalion, which officially has around 650 posts, have been providing support in the accident clinic, and from Thursday there will be 25.

Bundeswehr: Everyone is highly motivated

"No matter where we were," says Major Kevin Stötzer, "the requirements are no coincidence, but have always had something to do with overloading." Stötzer was company commander of the "Helping Hands" and thus coordinator of the battalions until a reorganization in December -Relatives in the Corona operation.

Before, during and after the support, the commander of the 3rd company said that there was a great deal of gratitude “at every place of work”.

And Commander Richter knows: "The soldiers were happy to do it." The motivation is "high across all ranks".

"Helping Hands" have been helping out since November 2020

The Bundeswehr’s “Helping Hands” got to work for the first time in November 2020;

up to 85 people from Murnauer worked in Munich for several months at the time, 20 at the health department in Weilheim.

All operations bring contacts - and convey a positive image of the Bundeswehr.

"That's good and feels good," says Richter.

Being able to support people directly also promotes the motivation of the soldiers.

But it costs strength and ties up strength.

Some other things will inevitably suffer as a result.

The help is "not our core mission," explains the commander - this is more about "providing IT services for the Bundeswehr".

You have to be careful "that you don't overstretch anything here and that you don't overwhelm the substance that you feed on".

The reality is that support has become permanent.

Deployment of thousands of soldiers is also viewed critically

The military commissioner of the German Bundestag, Eva Högl (SPD), had already indicated at the end of 2021 that she was increasingly critical of the ongoing deployment of thousands of soldiers in the fourth wave of the pandemic.

The media quoted Högl as saying that the fulfillment of orders in foreign assignments was not at risk anywhere, but there was no longer enough time for details;

Soldiers no longer felt adequately prepared.
