After the killing spree at the University of Heidelberg, the police tried to get an idea of the crime by interviewing witnesses and evaluating the results of the autopsy.

"Most of the around 30 biology students who were surprised by the perpetrator in a lecture hall have been questioned," said police spokesman Patrick Knapp on Wednesday in Mannheim.

Of course, there will also be a second round of questions.

Heidelberg - "The deeper we examine things, the more new questions arise."

An 18-year-old student shot other students several times in a lecture hall on Monday.

A 23-year-old student died as a result of a shot in the head, three other people were injured.

After the crime, the 18-year-old killed himself.

The investigators are hoping for background information from the autopsy of the perpetrator's corpse and the 23-year-old he shot.

This could show, for example, how close the gunman came to the woman and whether she was a random victim or was specifically targeted.

Knapp: "We want to reconstruct the crime as precisely as possible." However, there is no indication that the two young people studying the same subject knew each other.

One of the unanswered questions is how the man, who lives in Mannheim, got onto the Heidelberg campus unnoticed with his two guns he had bought abroad.

But it is clear, Knapp emphasized, that the killing spree has no political background.

In the meantime, the gunman's apartment and the rooms he used at his parents' in Berlin have been searched and electronic devices have been seized.

According to Knapp, the father had received a WhatsApp message not long before the crime, in which the son announced the crime.

The student wrote that "people need to be punished now".

The young man's parents were looked after by the Berlin police, Knapp said.

They too suffered enormously from their son's terrible deed.
