(CNN) --
Pope Francis called for a day of prayer for Ukraine during his general audience at the Vatican.
"With the prayer of Our Lord, I invite you to pray for peace in Ukraine, and to do so often today," he said.
"Let us insistently ask Our Lord that this country can see fraternity flourish, that it can overcome wounds, fears and divisions," Francis added.
Referring to World War II, the pope said Ukraine is "a country where people have suffered, have gone hungry, have suffered so much cruelty and deserve peace."

"May the prayers and invocations that rise to heaven touch the minds and hearts of those responsible on earth. Please, let there never be war.
