A 20-year-old cross-country skier died on Tuesday afternoon after a fatal fall in the Beaufortain massif, in Savoie, mountain rescue said on Wednesday January 26.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m.
The victim was moving alone below the Grand Mont d'Arêches (note: culminating at 2686 meters above sea level) when she fell down a slope before descending a corridor "
over several hundred meters
" and jumping a rocky bar, said the Courchevel High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM).
Supported by a Dragon 74 civil security helicopter, the rescuers could only observe on the spot the death of the victim, "
