In early 2018, the Hong Kong government commissioned a consultant to study and implement a pilot scheme for an intelligent parking system.
The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Chen Fan, responded in writing to a member's question, explaining the progress of the automatic parking system. Except for the Sheung Wan Central Road project, which has yet to be confirmed, the remaining uncompleted projects are expected to be completed by 2026 at the latest.
Together with the opened Hoi Shing Road project in Tsuen Wan, the five projects provide a total of about 1,300 parking spaces.

In a written reply to the Legislative Council member's question, Chen Fan said that he is actively promoting the automatic parking system project in the short-term tenancy car park and public works projects.
Among them, the short-term tenancy car park at Pak Shek Kok, Tai Po, was approved in December last year. It is expected that the automatic parking system will be put into service in the fourth quarter of 2022, providing a total of 240 parking spaces.
As for the joint-use building in Area 67 of Tseung Kwan O, construction has started and is expected to be completed in 2025, providing about 300 parking spaces; the district open space, gymnasium and public car park project at Sze Mei Street in San Po Kong is planned to be submitted to the Legislative Council this year The grant application is expected to be completed in 2026, providing a total of about 300 berths.
As for the project at the junction of Yen Chau Street and Tung Chau Street in Sham Shui Po, it is planned to submit an application for funding in the next legislative year, which is expected to be completed in 2026, with a total of about 200 parking spaces.
The number of parking spaces at the China-Hong Kong Road Community Facilities Complex in Sheung Wan is yet to be determined.

Chen Fan said that when bidding for new short-term tenancy car parks and re-bidding for existing short-term tenancy car parks, the authorities will study the feasibility of adopting an automatic parking system, and will consider promoting the automatic parking system in more public works projects.
He also pointed out that he will share the experience of implementing the automatic parking system project with stakeholders in a timely manner, and study and review the relevant operation notes with relevant departments to improve the application process for the use of automatic parking systems in private car parks.
