A Mexican journalist who told the president she feared for her life was shot dead on Sunday in the city of Tijuana.

Lourdes Maldondo was shot in her car in Tijuana, on the California border.

Just less than a week ago, another journalist in the city, Margarito Martinez, was shot in the head outside his home.

In all, since the beginning of the year, three journalists have been murdered in Mexico, which is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media people.

When asked at a press conference about her assassination, President Anders Manuel Lopez Obrador promised a comprehensive investigation.

"What happened is another unfortunate thing," said the president, who added that investigators have not yet determined the motive behind her murder and are examining possible links to a labor dispute that the veteran journalist found herself in.

Maldonado appeared at the president's press conference in 2019, asking for help because she feared for her life.

The source of the case in her case said that she had signed up for the government program for the protection of journalists, under which her home had received some police protection.

Critics of the president accuse him of failing to live up to his promise to reduce violence and fight organized crime and evasion of punishment.

He argues that crime and violence are the product of chronic corruption and inequality.

The human rights organization "Article 19" documented 145 murders of journalists in Mexico from 2000 to 2021, seven of them last year.

Following the wave of violence, journalists in the country demonstrated yesterday and demanded to find those responsible for the murder of their colleagues.

In the state of Puebla, in central Mexico, protesters placed flowers and candles in the street next to signs that read "I am angry about censorship."

In the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, it was written on one of the walls "Journalism is in danger" next to Maldondo's face.

Israel Ibra, president of the College of Communication in Baja California, said that if the government and society did not act against the phenomenon, they would be "complicit in the crime" not only in the murder of journalists, but also "in the murder of freedom of expression in Mexico."

The media networks in Mexico voted in favor of the demonstrations, which take place in parallel with the online protest campaign.

"Federal and state authorities must prevent attacks, protect journalists as they become victims, and investigate crimes committed against the media with determination," the human rights organization said in a statement.
