(CNN Spanish) --

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, declared that he was not educated in politics and did not receive any training for that position, he said on CNN en Español cameras in the first exclusive interview with an international media.

Also, he referred to his foreign policy, without giving concrete answers about the governments in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.

In a conversation with Fernando del Rincón in Conclusions, Castillo is convinced that he can finish his term, despite his inexperience and the scandals that have surrounded his government, which has barely lasted six months.

These are some of the most outstanding phrases of the interview on CNN:

"You have to ask the Venezuelans, right?"

That was the response, after initially evading it, by Pedro Castillo to Fernando del Rincón's question: Who do you recognize as president of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó or Nicolás Maduro?

Are Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua dictatorships?

The president replies: “I would like to have a well-united Latin America”, or “Cuba is a brother country”.

Only after several attempts does he limit himself to stating: "We will have to ask the Cubans."

With Venezuela follows the same script.

“I have many Venezuelans here and the problem is not the Venezuelans.

The problem is criminals.

The same Venezuelans against the Venezuelans who rob them.”

For Castillo, the reason why thousands of Venezuelans have emigrated to Peru is reduced to the fact that "there are also many Peruvians who live there (in Venezuela)".

“I will never have a model from abroad”

Castillo avoided commenting on the regimes of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, claiming respect for the autonomy of each country.

He assures that he would not like Peru to become one of those models.

When asked to define his ideology, he describes himself as "a provincial, I am an Andean teacher who embraces the needs of this country."

"I am not telling you that I am going to give you the sea for Bolivia (...) we will consult the people"

When it did not even cross his mind to be a candidate, he claimed in an event the access to the sea for Bolivia.

Now, as president, he has another strategy.

“I am not telling you that I am going to give you the sea for Bolivia (…) Now we will agree, we will consult the people.

For that, the people need to manifest themselves” because theirs, he assures, is a “totally democratic” model.

Castillo referred to Bolivians' aspiration to the sea as a "right."

"On July 28, 2026, come to shake hands. And I'm going to tell you: 'Task accomplished with my country'"

Castillo is optimistic about reaching the end of his government term in July 2026. Likewise, he guarantees that he will not seek to extend his stay in the House of Pizarro;

Peru's constitution establishes a five-year term without immediate reelection.

"The people have brought me here not to do what is suspected, but to do things well"

In just six months in office, Castillo faces multiple scandals that have undermined his popularity.

Will his term end?

Although in December the Congress already wanted to vacate it (a motion that did not prosper, Castillo assures that it was only "a sector of Congress", and that "the responsible parties of the left, of the center, the people and the congressmen who love the country did not They lent themselves to that game."

The request, presented in November by several opposition congressmen, was based, among other reasons, on the alleged "illegal use of public funds" in the 2021 campaign of Peru Libre.

The president disassociated himself from any act of corruption and the request was rejected in December by the plenary session of Congress by 46 votes in favor, 76 against and 4 abstentions.

For Castillo, a school teacher with no previous experience in government, this impeachment process is due to the fact that Congress has an agenda.

What is Castillo's desire to change the Constitution?

"I never went through a honeymoon, as has happened in other governments... I never trained to be a politician. I was not trained to be president"

In his management there has been, according to the president, "a learning process."

Castillo defends that he was not trained to be president.

“I did not go abroad.

I did not go to the United States because I did not lend myself to that.

I am here for the country, for the people.

And I'm here to stand up for the country.

And I'm not going to steal a penny from the country."

Although Castillo is showered with criticism, the president pointed out that the few months he has been in government have shown him that he cannot make mistakes and implicitly admitted that he cannot use Peru as trial and error.

Castillo said on CNN that Peru will continue to be his school: "School is doing things right, correcting what is wrong and doing things for the good of all Peruvians. That for me is also a school."

“(Cerrón) has no influence on cabinet appointments”

Resignations, dismissals and scandals have overshadowed the first months of his government as the president tries to disassociate himself from the controversial Vladimir Cerrón, general secretary of the Free Peru party.

The president of Peru denied the alleged influence of Cerrón in his government work.

"He has no influence on cabinet appointments," he said.

"It was never a clandestine office"

The Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic initiated investigations to verify contracts and awards made by Provías Descentralizado, an executing unit of the Ministry of Transport and Communications in charge of preparing, managing, administering and executing transport infrastructure projects and programs, in a house in Breña that The president usually visits and who hosted him during the campaign.

Castillo said that there he did not talk about business.

The president assured that "it was never a clandestine office."

To which he also added that "in the presidential office there is no bidding."
