"

Under these conditions, Russia must provide the necessary assistance to the People's Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk by supplying them with certain types of weapons to strengthen their defensive capacities

", declared the First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, Chamber high of the Russian Parliament, Andrey Tourchak, on public television.

One of the faces of the ruling party, United Russia, Andrei Tourchak accused the Kiev authorities of "

preparing a military aggression

" against these pro-Russian separatist regions.

Inflection of the official Russian position

Westerners, notably Washington, for their part accuse Russia of having massed tens of thousands of soldiers on the border with Ukraine with a view to a possible invasion of its Ukrainian neighbor.

Russia denies any plan for an offensive, but conditions a de-escalation on a series of requirements, in particular treaties guaranteeing that Ukraine will never join NATO.

Kiev and its Western allies already accuse Moscow of supporting militarily and financially the pro-Russian separatists that Kiev has been fighting in eastern Ukraine since 2014, but Moscow denies it.

Andrei Tourtchak's statements therefore mark a shift in the official Russian position displayed so far.

According to Andrei Tourchak, the United Russia party is very concerned about Western arms deliveries to the Ukrainian government, announced by the United States, the United Kingdom and the Baltic countries.

The number of shots targeting the Donetsk and Lugansk regions "

has gone up a notch (...), civilians are being killed

", he argued, calling for "

a stop to the regime of Kyiv

”.

Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 after a pro-Western revolution in its neighbor.

In the aftermath, a conflict between pro-Russian separatists and Kiev forces broke out in eastern Ukraine, killing more than 13,000 people to date.
