It was 11 p.m. when suddenly, the Suzanne-Buisson hall, in the northern districts of Bondy (Seine-Saint-Denis), was ravaged by an impressive fire.

At this late hour, however, there were no casualties.

“The covered market is engulfed in flames and requires a major hydraulic system.

It is isolated on all four sides and will no longer spread”, explains Captain Hardy, an officer at the BSPP (Paris fire brigade) wanting to be reassuring about the neighborhood.

“Reconnaissances are simply carried out in a neighboring building to reassure the inhabitants”, he adds, while some 80 firefighters are on site to contain the fire.

Stephen Hervé, the outgoing LR mayor, was about to leave his campaign office when he was alerted.

Already, he thinks that it is "an arson, because of its magnitude".

He also specifies that "the electricity had been redone three years ago and the safety commission had passed in 2020 and had not detected any problem".

In Bondy, the political context is also very flammable.

The city is in the midst of an election campaign.

Last Sunday, the first ballot of the partial municipal elections took place and Stephen Hervé, whose June 2020 election had been canceled, came out ahead of his PS competitor, former mayor Sylvine Thomassin.

He achieved a score of 49.89% against 36.73% for his challenger.

The candidates will decide next Sunday.

“I hope this fire is not related to the election campaign, adds the Republican candidate.

If this is the case, it is an act of great cowardice because it will complicate the daily life of the inhabitants.

Before the first ballot, the climate was already poisonous and acts of vandalism had been committed.

A fortnight ago, in particular, the giant fresco representing the child of the city and international football star, Kylian Mbappé, had been degraded, then on the night of January 20 to 21, Sylvine Thomassin's car had been set on fire.

At midnight, there was no material evidence to confirm that the fire in the hall was deliberate.

An investigation will obviously follow.

One certainty, this Thursday, the market will not be able to be held under the Suzanne-Buisson hall.
