Karl Lauterbach – his university career

Karl Lauterbach grew up in Oberzier in the immediate vicinity of the Jülich nuclear research facility as the child of a working-class family.

His father worked at a nearby dairy.

Despite very good grades in elementary school, he only received a recommendation from a secondary school, which he later understood as discrimination due to his family background.

At the Hauptschule he was underchallenged and, with the support of his teachers, switched first to the Realschule, then to the Gymnasium am Wirteltor, where he passed his Abitur in 1983.

After graduating from high school, he first studied medicine in Aachen, Texas (USA) and Düsseldorf (1991: doctorate to Dr. med.).

At this point, Lauterbach had already begun further studies at Harvard University (Boston/Massachusetts).

The following year he earned his second doctorate from Harvard.

The first milestone in his career in Germany came in 1998 when he was appointed director of the newly founded Institute for Health Economics and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Cologne.
