Love wins: Holocaust survivors Sarah and Joseph get married at the height of the plague Israel today

86-year-old Joseph and 66-year-old Sarah met about a year and a half ago in the middle of the corona and got married a year ago • Sarah opened chapter two in her life after being widowed by her husband of 45 years • Joseph lost his second wife after battling cancer


Sarah and Joseph got married on the horizon, in a small ceremony in the shadow of the corona plague in the presence of only a quorum, her children received their marriage in a very good spirit, they were glad she had found a solution to loneliness.

The relationship between Sarah and Joseph is flourishing, they travel a lot together, play Remy and mostly talk.

They currently live together in Yosef's house, the two attend day clubs of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security in the city of Netivot.

Sarah's first year of widowhood was very difficult for her, she described in her great loneliness as she lived next to her late husband for 45 years.

Afterwards, and in light of her children's requests, she moved to Netivot, where her young son approached her and offered to meet Yosef, who prays with him every day in the synagogue.

At first Sarah flatly refused, due to the age gap between the two, which stands at about 20 years.

She finally apologized, and agreed to meet with him.

"I met a pleasant-mannered, clear-sighted man," she said.

Finally, what helped her overcome the fear of the age gap was the strong desire to solve the problem of loneliness from which she had suffered so much "Forty-five years I was with my husband and now being alone, it's scary."

According to Sarah, Joseph let her choose where the two's first date would take place.

Joseph was born in Algeria in 1936. He describes a happy and happy childhood together with his four brothers and sisters.

When the Nazis arrived in Algeria, Joseph recalled how they tattooed numbers on the arms of the Jews, abused and perpetrated many acts of violence during the Holocaust.

Joseph described how after the end of World War II the discriminatory attitude and hatred towards the Jews continued.

Against the background of the establishment of the State of Israel, riots began among the Jews of the state.

The rioters broke into the house of Joseph's parents and murdered his entire family before his eyes.

When asked how he escaped their hands, Joseph replied that it was a "miracle from heaven."

The rioters broke his hands and teeth and after he tried to escape from his house, they managed to reach him, threw him into a pit and poured oil on him.

After several unsuccessful attempts to set him on fire, they fled the scene.

After he managed to escape from the pit, two small children grabbed him and tried to complete the craft with a razor.

Joseph fought them, threw sand before their eyes and fled to one of the cemeteries in the city, where he found refuge.

After the rioters stopped chasing him, he returned to his parents' house and was shocked by the harsh sights that were revealed to him.

At the same time, there was still a large group of rioters in his parents' house who would try to murder more Jews.

Joseph identified a flock of sheep and hid among them for many hours, until French soldiers who collected him passed by and took him to a nearby town to identify the bodies of his parents and brothers for burial.

"I saw my mom and dad and my siblings, I did not see my little sister, they probably kidnapped her" he described sadly.

Yosef immigrated to Israel at the age of 10 with the help of "Aliyat Hanoar" and arrived at Kibbutz Givat Brenner.

From there he was transferred to a youth kibbutz in Caesarea until his enlistment at the age of 17 and a half in the IDF to the parachuted Nahal.

After his release he did not know where and finally decided to return to the army for permanent service and served as a transport driver for six years.

Joseph first married at the age of 21 and his wife died in the birth of their sixth son, when he was 41. He remarried, but was widowed by his second wife who died after a war on cancer.

Sarah (Sarita) was born in Izmir, Turkey and immigrated to Israel in 1961 at the age of 10. Her family immigrated following much anti-Semitism on the part of the local population which included shouting, cursing and acts of violence.

"It was also the dream of mother and father to immigrate to our land, the Holy Land, the dream of every Jew."

Her family sailed from Izmir to Istanbul, where they boarded a plane.

Upon arrival, they settled in the Ashdod city transit camp.

Sarah got married at the age of 19, experienced a happy and happy marriage of 45 years that included four children.

Her husband passed away six years ago.
