Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stressed that Russia no longer has a place for further retreat because NATO is already crawling to its borders, stressing that Washington's refusal to provide security guarantees will complicate the situation greatly.
Medvedev said in an interview with Russian media published today: “There is no desire for war in any way, and no one is looking for it, and everything must be done so that there is no war, especially between Russia and NATO.”
Medvedev added, "The only way to avoid war is negotiation, but there are many who are increasing their escalation, some because of poor thinking and others because they follow a certain political line."
In response to a question about whether Russia has an action plan in case the United States refuses to provide security guarantees, Medvedev said: “Such plans are never disclosed,” noting that the Russian demands on security guarantees are not harsh, but are simply very concrete and very specific.
Medvedev pointed out that even if Ukraine does not join NATO, weapons may be deployed on its territory under the cover of bilateral agreements, indicating that Russia needs guarantees to raise the clear threats that have crystallized until the present time, and they must be binding.
The deputy head of the Russian Security Council stressed that his country and China are not seeking to establish a military alliance, pointing out at the same time that the relations between the two countries are at their highest levels, which affects the balance of power in the world.
Yesterday, the United States delivered, through its ambassador in Moscow, John Sullivan, its written response to the draft bilateral treaty on security guarantees previously provided by the Russian side.
It is noteworthy that the Russian Foreign Ministry distributed on the seventeenth of last month two draft Russian documents on mutual legal security guarantees requested by the United States and NATO.
