Paris: rats invite themselves into the Batignolles eco-district

The presence of rats is a rampant problem in the 17th arrondissement. Some residents of Rostropovitch Street are exasperated and worried

Rue Rostropovitch, along the Martin-Luther-King park in the Batignolles eco-district (17th century), the inhabitants feel trapped.

Aurélie is completely distraught in the face of the numbers of swarming little beasts which seem to be multiplying: "Now the rats don't even hide to go out, whatever the time of day".

The young mother had got used to the presence of small rodents at the bottom of her building, but when two of them entered her home, it was too much.

Mother of a 5-month-old toddler, what previously looked like a hygiene problem has turned into a real danger for her and her family.

The parks are overrun

On the WhatsApp group of the condominium, the neighbors send each other photos and videos which they gather as evidence to ask the town hall and Elogie-Siemp, the social landlord of the building, to act.

“We are trying to act on the location of the residential building, which is our responsibility, but we have no control over the park and the adjacent buildings,” explains the company contacted.

Despite the intervention of a rat extermination team in October, Aurélie notes that the rats are accessing the apartments from the courtyard of the nursery backing onto her building: “They are climbing the facade.

When I realized that, I stopped opening the window as much as possible to ventilate my apartment.

At the nearby bakery, while waiting for answers to her requests for intervention, the owner has had panels installed on her windows, overlooking the park, to hide the rats that roam there at ground level.

"A bird's eye view of rats at lunchtime is not very appetizing for customers," she says in despair.

Poison resistant

“Unfortunately, the case of rue Rostropovitch is not specific to the arrondissement”, explains Geoffroy Boulard, LR mayor of the 17th century.

Dissatisfied with the actions of struggles orchestrated by the central town hall, the elected representative of northern Paris took up the file very early on at the start of his mandate in 2018. Reporting application, awareness campaigns and a citizen rat extermination brigade mobilized in the sector have since made it possible to reduce the number of reports of rats by 70% over the past 3 years.

While worrying that, "40% of rats in town have developed a resistance to the poisons used to exterminate them", underlines Geoffroy Boulard who explains that he commissioned a study on the subject.
