The future of the bridge on Steinebacher Weg in Weßling has been clarified.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in early 2023.

Weßling – The main street bridge in Weßling over Steinebacher Weg is being renovated.

The municipal councils decided on Tuesday evening with 14:4 votes.

At the same time, they reversed a decision from 2019 in which their predecessors had advocated the demolition of the underpass and the construction of a corrugated steel structure.

With the vote, the municipal council followed a recommendation by Dr.

Michael Niederwald.

"In terms of sustainability, I propose a renovation of the bridge," said the representative of the engineering firm "Suess Staller Schmitt".

Peter Weiß (FWW) saw it similarly: "It's always better to renovate or upgrade things that have already been built."

During the construction period of around six months, the main road in the area of the bridge has to be completely closed. The full closure at the lane divider in front of the school and at the roundabout in the north of Meilinger Weg should be a little shorter. “Traffic will be diverted via the dirt road in the east. From there, the vehicles will probably be directed back to the through road via Steinebacher Weg and Max-Dörner-Weg," explained Florian Zarbo, CEO of the municipal company. "We're widening the dirt road to around 3.50 metres." The temporary lane will cost around 50,000 euros, because even if it's closed to heavy goods traffic, the fire brigade or MVV buses will also use the route.

Andreas Lechermann (CSU) brought up the idea of directing buses and the fire brigade via Grünsinker Straße.

Niederwald gave the additional costs for a half-way closure of the main road, which was suggested in the December meeting, at around 100,000 euros.

And the construction time is extended by four months.

That was not an option for the councilors, because the excavators would still be rolling when the new school opens in autumn 2023.

Also for cost reasons, Peter Weiß had to say goodbye to his dream of a cycle path along the main road and over the bridge.

"To widen the road, we would have to intercept the embankment and clear trees," Zarbo explained to Starnberger Merkur.

"We're talking about around 700,000 euros."

With the decision, all planning work can be commissioned and work can be put out to tender.

Zarbo hopes that preparatory measures will be taken this year and that work will begin in January 2023.

It is unclear whether Steinebacher Weg will be closed to traffic.

The municipal council wants to make this decision after an on-site visit with Zarbo, Niederwald and Mayor Michael Sturm.
