Would a conflict between Russia and Ukraine create a serious energy crisis in Europe?
The question is strategic.
In 2020, gas represented around 16% of energy consumption in France, but 27% in Germany and 41% in Italy.
Last year, Russia supplied up to 46% of EU gas imports, more than 20% of its consumption.
A fall in Russian deliveries would exacerbate the crisis born in 2021 from shortages and which has led to a fourfold increase in the price of gas in Europe.
The White House is aware of the difficulties that Europe would have in finding other energy resources if Russia reduces or cuts its gas supplies.
A risk aggravated by the sanctions envisaged by Washington against Moscow.
Among these is the blocking of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, supposed to send gas from Russia to Germany.
Washington has been fighting for years against this new pipe which will worsen Europe's dependence on Russian gas.
