Bad Tölz - The tasks of the city administration also include the care of the well over 7,000 trees that stand on the Tölz city grounds.

At the press event in the town hall, the city recently explained why tree felling and maintenance work for the plant giants is ongoing and will continue in the near future.

“We have over 7,000 trees in the city area.

That's really a lot," said city hall spokeswoman Birte Otterbach.

However, these would only be trees on public land in the city area.

Neither the trees on urban forest areas nor those on private properties are included in this number.

In order to care for and observe this large number and variety of trees, the city has been busy since May 2021 through Simon Behnenburg.

As a tree inspector, he must assess trees from root to crown and decide when a tree needs to be felled.

Currently 1,700 trees are affected by maintenance measures, 50 have to be felled.

"extremes are increasing"

The specialist farmer for tree care sees one reason above all for the increased need for care: climate change.

“The extremes are simply increasing.

The strong winds and storms, the heat waves, that's always a threat to trees," said Behmenburg.

Many trees nowadays also have to deal with diseases.

As a representative example, he named the ash dieback.

Almost all ash trees in the city are affected by the fungal disease.

In those who are standing on the Isar promenade, the disease can be recognized, among other things, by the sparse treetops.

In the long term, it cannot be ruled out that alternatives will have to be sought for new plantings.

Despite this, the city always tries to give the trees a second chance.

The tree inspector often gives sick trees another year and only then checks whether they really need to be felled.

"Falling down is always the last option," emphasized Otterbach.

Between the traffic safety obligation and tree protection

But it's not just the warming of the earth that is causing costly tree care campaigns.

Traffic safety also plays an important role.

As the head of the municipal depot, Florian Schallhammer, remembers, the problem of finding a good balance between the obligation to ensure traffic safety and the protection of trees and nature was "always a sensitive issue".

"In the city, neither people nor things may be injured by trees," emphasized Mayor Ingo Mehner.

The requirements in this area have increased significantly.

The position of tree inspector is therefore all the more important.

"In the past, external consultants were always commissioned to do this," said Schallhammer.

The city also charges a lot for tree protection and maintenance work.

"Even if the budget is not yet finished, we can say that the costs for the tree care work will be in the six-digit range," explained Mehner.
