The 21st Extraordinary Congress of the "Nur Otan" Kazakh party unanimously elected the current president of the country, Jomart Tokayev, as party leader.
"By the decision of the 21st extraordinary congress of the party, today the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Jomart Tokayev, was unanimously elected head of the Nur Otan party on the proposal of the former president of the country and of the congress Nursultan Nazarbayev," the press office of the Kazakh presidency said in a statement on Twitter.
During the conference, Tokayev noted that Nazarbayev did a lot to turn the country into a strong state and added: “When well-known politicians and scientists predicted in the early 1990s that the country would soon collapse due to the demographic characteristics and unstable borders of Kazakhstan, Nazarbayev took on the task of state building in that most difficult historical period for our country.”
Tokayev stated that "in the mid-nineties Nazarbayev began work on the legal registration of borders and ended with their identification and demarcation, and this achievement was of strategic importance for the safe operation of our state."
The former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev announced at the end of November 2021 that he had decided to give up his powers as head of the "Nur Otan" party, stressing that Tokayev should lead the party.
