The defendant told his wife that he was going to carry out an attack in Jerusalem, near the Nablus Gate he encountered police officers who began to suspect him and found a knife and a screwdriver in his pocket.

The Be'er Sheva District Court today (Friday) convicted defendant Walid Abu Madiam of Rahat of attempted murder, which was a terrorist act and possession of a knife.

In doing so, the court accepted the prosecution's position.

According to the verdict, following anger he accumulated toward Jewish security personnel, the defendant decided to carry out an attack and harm Jewish policemen on the Temple Mount and die as a "martyr."

On Friday, November 2020, the defendant equipped himself with a knife and a screwdriver, told his wife that he was going to carry out an attack in Jerusalem and asked a friend to drive him there.

During the entire trip, the defendant called his wife and family members, but he did not answer their calls but only wrote to his wife that if she told anyone she was "deported."

When the defendant arrived at the Nablus gate, he got out of the vehicle and began walking toward the Temple Mount, on the way he encountered police officers who suspected him and began asking him questions about his actions.

Defendant was stressed, confused in his answers and when asked to take out things he had in his pocket, he refrained from revealing the knife and screwdriver he had brought with him.

Only when the defendant raised his hands for the purpose of the search did the officer identify the screwdriver, and the defendant later admitted that he also had a knife.

The district court dismissed all of the defense's arguments that his actions did not constitute the offenses of attempted murder among other things because he repented and did not stab, and also thought of his family and therefore did not commit the act.

As stated, the position of the State Attorney's Office was accepted.

"The defendant has revealed his intention to carry out an attack openly and unequivocally," the verdict read.

"During his interrogations at the GSS and the police, he clarified that his intention was to kill a soldier or a policeman.

Defendant well understood the significance of his actions and desired the natural consequences of his actions.

It has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that his actions stemmed from a nationalist or ideological motive and posed a real risk of serious injury to a person's body. "
