Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Husam El-Din Ala, affirmed that the ongoing US, Turkish and Israeli siege, terrorism, aggression and occupation of parts of the Syrian territories cause grave violations of human rights, foremost of which are the right to life, health, food and development.

In a statement today during the session of the Human Rights Council devoted to the adoption of the report of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Syria, Ambassador Alla indicated that the mechanism of this review constitutes the optimal international framework for an objective, transparent and professional consideration of the human rights record of all countries on an equal footing, without discrimination or selectivity, and based on the principles of Constructive dialogue and cooperation according to a perspective that aims to assist states in advancing their national efforts to protect and promote human rights instead of invoking those rights to attack states and serve intrusive agendas driven by political considerations, as happens during sessions of the Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Ala indicated that based on this understanding, Syria submitted its third national report, and its delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, contributed to discussing the report and to responding to the questions and recommendations raised by delegations in a constructive and objective manner, expressing Syria’s thanks to the delegations of countries that participated in the discussion of Syria’s national report It presented objective and constructive recommendations that are consistent with the goals and principles on which the universal periodic review mechanism was based and reflected an awareness of the conditions and circumstances that Syria is going through and the challenges facing its efforts to implement the recommendations of the previous round and to strengthen national frameworks for the performance of its international obligations in the field of human rights, foremost among which are the negative effects of the economic blockade and coercive measures. The illegal unilateralism imposed by the United States and the European Union on the Syrian people.

Ambassador Ala expressed Syria's regret at the attempt by some delegations to divert the discussion session of its national report from the objective track and to exploit it to practice misleading and deception and to try to restore the atmosphere of confrontation and polarization witnessed in the discussions of the agenda items of the Human Rights Council, which led Syria to immediately reject a limited number of recommendations motivated by political considerations that contradict With the principles on which the universal periodic review mechanism is based, noting that with regard to the rest of the recommendations contained in the document that was approved today, the national bodies will study them with interest and objectivity, and Syria will present a position on them within the specified date, stressing that the objective recommendations will contribute to stimulating national efforts to identify the topics Which requires more work and follow-up, which would achieve the ultimate goal of the universal periodic review mechanism, which is to improve human rights conditions in all countries.
