A popular meeting place for skiers and mountain hikers on the Middle Sudelfeld is to be revitalized.

Owner Oliver Herbst is planning the renovation of the Sonnenalm mountain inn.

Bayrischzell - It is located at 1250 meters above sea level in the middle of the Sudelfeld ski area and lives up to its name: the Sonnenalm.

Owner Oliver Herbst, who took over the property from Georg Gnädig last summer, has now submitted an extensive planning application to the municipality for the interior and exterior renovation of the building.

In addition, the construction of a new outbuilding for tourist use is planned, as Managing Director Josef Acher reported at the meeting of the Bayrischzell municipal council.

There were already plans for the Sonnenalm in 2017, but Gnädig never implemented them.

"Resurrect old charm"

Autumn now wants to get down to business. "We want to revive the old charm and create a place of relaxation where you feel comfortable," says the managing director of Immovision Property GmbH, based in Starnberg, when asked by our newspaper. A friend had drawn his attention to the Alm many years ago. Last winter he was up there a few times and fell in love with the object.

It was announced in the municipal council that his plans envisage an extension of the terrace on the east side.

The vestibule on the west side will be extended, and the new entrance area will also be created there.

Inside, Herbst is planning an open, centrally located show kitchen, a new arrangement of the guest rooms and the renovation of the sanitary facilities.

On the upper floor, the planning application provides for a holiday apartment as well as an operator's apartment.

Staff rooms are also to be set up on both floors.

From the point of view of the administration, none of this involves significant construction work, because the conversion is mainly “internally reorganized and involves a design improvement”, stressed Managing Director Acher.

The larger construction site is being built next to the main building on the south-west side: instead of an existing building, Herbst wants to erect a ten by ten meter building for additional management.

"For takeaway and street vending," Acher explained.

A holiday apartment is planned for the upper floor of the outbuilding, accessible via an outside staircase.

From the planning point of view, the project is "an appropriate extension of a permitted commercial operation".

Water and sewer development are also available.

Mayor finds project "worthy of support"

Mayor Georg Kittenrainer (CSU) welcomed the renovation of the gastronomy with room rental: "There is nothing worse than when houses keep coming down," he said.

Therefore, the construction project is future-oriented and only “worthy of support” from the community.

Outdoor sales, in particular, meet the zeitgeist if implemented in this way.

Egid Stadler (CSU), Deputy Mayor and Managing Director of Bergbahnen Sudelfeld GmbH, also saw it that way.

"We don't have enough gastronomy at Sudelfeld from the start." That's why he's happy about the renovation.

Especially the Sonnenalm on the middle Sudelfeld has always been "an important and well-running business".

Recently, plans for a new cable car to the Sudelfeld had provided a topic of conversation.

Owner believes in "golden future of Sudelfeld"

Herbst also sees the potential.

"I believe in a golden future for Sudelfeld," explains the real estate agent.

If the district office also agrees to his plans after the municipality, he wants to start work in the basement and ground floor of the main building in the summer.

The reopening is planned for the 2022/2023 winter season.

In the summer of 2023, the renovation of the upper floor will continue.

Autumn has to extend the renovation to two years because the snow-free period is too short to get up there long enough with the necessary construction machinery.

When everything is ready, you can even rent the Sonnenalm exclusively.

However, the gastronomy on the ground floor always remains open to skiers and hikers, emphasizes the owner.

Head chef comes from the Hermannsdorfer Landwerkstätten

The Alm is currently open with a small pop-up kiosk, a guest room and the terrace. The map is manageable, the kitchen and transitional concession currently do not allow more. Head chef is Thomas Thielemann, who ran the Schweinsbräu at the Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten in Glonn for 28 years. He later cooked for a while at the Feichtner Hof. He will continue to put his culinary stamp on the Sonnenalm with his regional cuisine. "The conversion requires a major investment," admits Herbst. “But I am convinced that it will pay off in the long term. We are overjoyed with the location – in the middle of the piste in winter and in this beautiful landscape in summer.”
