The head of the CDU employee wing CDA, Karl-Josef Laumann, apparently wants to take up the post of chairman again at the Bundestag at the end of May.
Officially, he emphasizes that he will only decide on the issue "after the state elections" in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 15.
Internally, however, Laumann has repeatedly signaled his willingness to run again, according to party circles.
Since the 64-year-old has held the management position since 2005, parts of the association are counting on a generational change at the top of the CDA.
MEP Dennis Radtke, who is already one of Laumann's deputies, is considered a possible successor.
The personnel is tense because it can affect the internal climate of the Christian Democrats.
Radtke is considered a critic of future party leader Friedrich Merz.
He recently warned the CDU leadership against focusing too much on economic issues.
Laumann, who is also Minister of Health in North Rhine-Westphalia, is said to have a good relationship with the new party leader.
The Merz camp is therefore relying on Laumann's confirmation in order to avoid a directional dispute in the party.
