Good news from Nandlstadt: The renovation work in the forest pool should be completed by summer 2022.

The popular natural pool has been closed since August 2018.

Nandlstadt

– The forest pool in Nandlstadt actually attracts numerous visitors every year.

But the natural pool has been closed since August 2018 and has been renovated since July of last year.

During a visit to the construction site, which is completely covered with snow that day, Mayor Gerhard Betz expresses his hope that the forest pool will also be able to open again at the beginning of the summer holidays.

The good news: “We are very well on schedule,” he says.

Water first dumped in August 2018

Review: It was August 2018 when a bathing ban was imposed in the forest pool - because the water had "tipped over" and a germ load was detected.

All attempts by the community to empty, clean and refill the pool have been in vain.

The popular natural pool had to be closed to visitors again and again.

In order to prevent the microbiological values, which increase particularly during longer periods of heat, from endangering the health of bathers, the municipality was requested by the health department in June 2019 to treat the water using biological and mechanical processes - in accordance with the Infection Protection Act.

A few days later, the forest pool had to be closed again: "Due to the lack of disinfection of the bathing water, an increased risk to human health from pathogens cannot be ruled out.

Bathe at your own risk”, was written on a sign on site at the end of June.

The bathing ban followed two days later, and the season ended early in mid-July 2019.

The Nandlstadt market had meanwhile commissioned a feasibility study.

The result, announced by Nandlstadt's Managing Director Michael Reithmeier in November 2019, was sobering: "The study clearly shows that a bathing operation (...) is only possible with biological water treatment (...)." The costs, so Reithmeier back then, would be in the seven-digit range.

Bathing season 2020 completely cancelled

What was already apparent for the year 2020 became certain at the beginning of June: "Bathing in the forest pool is not possible this year," announced the newly elected mayor Gerhard Betz.

And so it was up to the community employees and councilors to work hard to create a concept and apply for funding.

Forest pool renovation starts in July 2021

With a two-month delay, the time had finally come in July 2021: the official groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the forest pool took place - in the presence of a number of administrative employees, market councilors and construction manager Claus Schmitt.

Former mayor Jakob Hartl also grabbed a spade to give the go-ahead for the construction work.

In the coming months, a water cycle is to be created through which the pool water will be completely cleaned once a day using biological wet and dry filters.

Mayor Gerhard Betz put the costs at around 1.3 million euros at the time, with grants to be expected – both from the government (water sector) and from urban development funding (outdoor facilities).

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The forest pool is currently like a major construction site: a dry filter system was installed behind the children's pool and a wet filter system around the popular "bathing island" in the large natural pool.

The children's area is also being upgraded: an adventure playground is to be created - including a 64 square meter sand play area and a 123 square meter paddling area with a water depth of around 50 centimetres.

Reopening planned for summer 2022

Autumn played into the hands of the construction workers last year: the filter systems could be installed and planted, and the large natural pool got a new layer of concrete.

In addition, the required pipes were laid around the natural pool.

Nothing is currently happening on the construction site due to the weather.

But in March, the mayor hopes, things should continue.

In addition to the work on the natural pool and the children's area, the path to the forest pool is also to be flattened to make it easier for older or disabled people to access it.

The market council still has to decide what exactly this will look like.

If everything goes according to plan and there are no corona-related delivery problems with building materials, the popular natural pool should open on time for the 2022 summer holidays.

"That would be our goal - and also my great wish," says the head of the town hall, for whom the forest pool renovation is an "affair of the heart".
