Indicted for extortion in an organized gang, the mayor of Barcarès and vice-president of the agglomeration of Perpignan, Alain Ferrand, was placed in pre-trial detention on Friday January 28 at Baumettes in Marseille, after revocation of his judicial control, learned AFP to the prosecution.

This last measure was then relaxed, allowing him to go on certain days to his department, to his town and to Perpignan.

After the first election of Alain Ferrand to the town hall in 1995, the mayor and his wife Joëlle then succeeded each other at the head of the commune of Barcarès, according to the ineligibility of one and the other. .

In 1999, Alain Ferrand was sentenced to three years of ineligibility for abuse of corporate assets.

He was also subsequently convicted of illegal taking of interest and tax evasion.

During the municipal elections of 2020, Alain Ferrand was re-elected hands down, in the first round, as mayor of Barcarès, a town of 6,000 inhabitants year-round but whose population can increase tenfold in the summer.

In 2021, however, he failed in the departmental elections.
