A 55-year-old from Michigan, USA, has won $3 million in the lottery.
However, she almost missed the good news.
Michigan - Emails that end up in the spam folder often promise great investments and unbelievable profits.
In the vast majority of cases, however, scammers* who want account information are behind the emails.
The 55-year-old American Laura Spears, on the other hand, discovered a real winning notification from the Michigan Lottery in the spam folder.
The email about winning the lottery ended up in spam
"I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot is pretty big, so I bought a ticket," Spears told the Michigan Lottery.
"A few days later I was looking for a missing email and checked the spam folder in my email account."
That's when she discovered the winning notification.
Spears didn't want to believe the good news at first and checked her lottery account again.
In fact: she had won three million dollars.
Spears wants to retire with the win
Spears now wants to share the profits with her family and retire with the money earlier than planned.
And she learned one thing: "I've definitely added the Michigan Lottery to my safe senders list just in case I'm ever lucky enough to get another email about a big win," she said lottery winner.
It is extremely unlikely to become a lottery millionaire*.
However, a lucky few actually make money this way.
For example, there were 181 new lottery millionaires in Germany in 2021.
