At the age of 75: Maj. Gen. Oren Shachor passed away Israel today

Maj. Gen. Oren Shachor passed away today (Saturday) at the age of 75,

after a long career in the army - where he held a variety of positions in the Intelligence Corps and served as the coordinator of operations in the territories.

After his release he was president of the ICC Israel (International Chamber of Commerce), vice president of the Association of Chambers of Commerce in Israel and vice chairman of the Chamber of Commerce through the Silk Road in China.

Black led a 33-year military career, during which he held a number of positions in the Combat Intelligence Corps and the Intelligence Division.

Among other things, he was the intelligence officer of the Southern Command and held most of the field positions in the southern sector and in the Golan Heights.

Participated in the Six Day War and the war of attrition in the northern sector in the 1970s, where he was even wounded during the battles.

Participated in the Yom Kippur War, the Suez Canal and the Golan Heights, and also participated in Operation Peace of the Galilee.

From 1982 to 1986, he held key positions in the Research Division of the Armed Forces, where he was, among other things, responsible for the military and political research of Syria, Lebanon and Iraq, and served as Deputy Chief of the Armed Forces for Operations.

In 1986 he received the rank of brigadier general, and was appointed commander of the Foreign Forces Liaison Unit.

In 1988, he was appointed Chief Intelligence Officer, commanded the corps during Israel's involvement in the Gulf War, and reorganized the Intelligence Corps.

In 1992, he served as Deputy Military Comptroller of the Defense System.

In this position he was responsible for coordinating and conducting military audits in the defense establishment.

In 1995, he was promoted to the rank of major general, and was appointed by the Minister of Defense and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and the Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, to coordinate government operations in the territories.

As part of this role, he reorganized the Civil Administration and the Coordination Administrations in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip, in a format of streamlining and significantly reducing standards.

During this time he was appointed head of the Civilian Committee in the negotiations for the Interim Agreement with the Palestinians.

As part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Shachor was responsible for conducting and concluding the negotiations, and for formulating four agreements related to the Interim Settlement.

This is in addition to his partnership with a team that dealt with all contacts with the Palestinians.

Among other things, he was responsible for managing the day-to-day economic life of the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip. 

Black ended his military service following a meeting with Shimon Peres, the then head of the opposition, while the current prime minister was Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu released him from his position on the dialogue team with the Palestinians, claiming that he was perceived as an army officer interfering in political affairs.

Against this background he ended his military career after 33 years of service.
