Christian Baldauf is the only candidate for the state presidency of the CDU in Rhineland-Palatinate - Andreas Kettern has withdrawn his candidacy, said Secretary General Jan Zimmer on Saturday.
The retired teacher Kettern from Guntersblum was surprisingly nominated by the Rhein-Selz municipal association just a few days ago.
Mainz - The CDU state board under the outgoing chairwoman Julia Klöckner decided unanimously to refrain from a formal member survey because only one applicant was available.
The new state chairman is to be elected at a party conference on March 26 in Wittlich.

The 54-year-old Baldauf was his party's top candidate in the state elections lost by the CDU in March 2021, after the SPD's state chairwoman Julia Klöckner had failed in two previous elections.
The 49-year-old politician announced one day after the CDU defeat in the federal elections in September last year that she would no longer run for the state presidency - and called for a change in content and personnel.
