The Ministry of Environmental Protection opened an investigation today (Saturday) following pollution in Nahal Hatzor, which carries water to Jordan and from there to the Sea of Galilee.

This, apparently following a flood in the leachate pools of the "figs" waste site caused by the heavy rains last week.

The ministry clarified that the leachates flowing into the river come from mixed waste, and that they contain a variety of hazardous substances.

Their flow into streams can cause irreversible damage to soil and water pollution and the destruction of ecosystems.

Beyond the ecological consequences, residents of the area claim that the water slide could lead to the rupture of dirt batteries and the flow of water on Road 90 that passes over Nahal Hatzor, thus causing the danger of vehicles slipping.

The "Figs" site in the Birya forest in the Galilee was filled and closed three years ago, but it did not undergo the required restoration procedure.

It was previously operated by the "Association of Solid Waste Cities in the Eastern Golan Heights", which unites about 15 local authorities in the Galilee and Golan Heights.

Authorities did not allocate the necessary budget to fund the restoration of the site, which led to the flooding of the five leachate pools and the overflow of their water into the nearby stream.

About two months ago, the Ministry of Environmental Protection issued a warning to the landfill site under the Business Licensing Law and the Water Law, in which it demanded the closure and removal of hazards at the site, especially the leachate pools, which were expected to flow outside the site.

The ministry said at the time that "the managers of the landfill site have been negligent in rehabilitating the site for many years, and now the Ministry of Environmental Protection has exhausted all administrative enforcement procedures, and turned to the Water Authority for enforcement. At the same time.

According to the Water Authority inspectors, the pollution is not unequivocally due to the leachate ponds, but the Ministry of Environmental Protection stated that it "continues to monitor and monitor the issue both in terms of promoting leachate pond treatment and enforcement. We have exhausted our administrative tools - alerts, hearings Investigation file. "
